When crews first arrived they learned that a fork lift operator inadvertently backed into a 275 gallon capacity tote filled with about 85 gallons of a chemical causing it to leak. The operator notified his supervisor who called for an evacuation of the building and then called 911.

The Virginia Department of Emergency Management (VDEM) and Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (VDEQ) along with the Regional Hazardous Materials Team were called to the scene to assist.

It has been determined that the compromised tote was filled with about 85 gallons of Hydrochloric Acid. A local environmental services company, W.E.L., Inc. has been contracted by VDEM and are already on scene working to clean up the spill.

There were no injuries reported and no additional evacuations (other than that of the Ardagh plant) were required.

The metal packaging manufacturing plant is not yet in operation.
