(WSLS)- The House Republican leadership will hold elections to replace outgoing Majority Leader Eric Cantor. Current Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy of California is expected to be the front runner. Cantor stepped down last week after he was unexpectedly defeated in the Virginia primary. If McCarthy wins the post, Republicans will also vote for a new majority whip.

The House Energy and Commerce Committee will hold a hearing on carbon dioxide regulations for power plants. Lawmakers will hear testimony on the Environmental Protection Agency’s recently issued proposal that would cut carbon pollution and other harmful air pollutants from existing power plants blamed for climate change. They’ll also discuss the risks and high costs of climate in-action.

President Barack Obama will present the Medal of Honor for conspicuous gallantry today at a White House ceremony. U.S. Marine Corporal William Kyle Carpenter will get the award for his courageous actions while serving as an automatic rifleman in Afghanistan. He’ll be the eighth living recipient awarded the Medal of Honor for his selfless actions in Iraq or Afghanistan.
