VA Rail Officials Confirm Track Defect

Today at the Virginia Railroad Safety and Security Task Force meeting, Virginia rail officials confirmed a defect was found on the Lynchburg track just one day before a CSX train carrying Bakken crude oil derailed back in April.

According to officials, an inspecting machine picked up the defect; but officials say at this point they don't know what type of defect it is.

But that's not the only announcement that shocked the members of the task force.

The director of Utility and Railroad Safety State Cooperation Commission also announced they do not have enough railroad inspectors. There are only four inspectors in all of Virginia who are responsible for all of the railways.

WSLS has also learned the Lynchburg track, which stretches from West Virginia to Newport News, is labeled as a "High Risk Track" because of the type of chemicals that are transported on the railroad.
