Habitat for Humanity heads to Floyd County to help aging population

FLOYD - Habitat for Humanity is taking a different approach to housing in Floyd County.

Typically, the organization builds a house first, then finds a family who is in need.  This time, they are seeking a family out before they break ground.  The new house will be designed for a single family, but will have a unit attached for extended family members who are aging. Builders are hoping to cater the new structure to a specific family's needs.

This project is in response to a report from the NRV Livability Initiative, which predicts the number of seniors in the New River Valley will nearly double during the next 20 years. Habitat spokesperson Shelley Fortier says it is important for people to be able to age in place in an environment where they are comfortable and close to help.Â
