Blacksburg passes farmers market ordinance

BLACKSBURG -  Blacksburg Town Council gives farmers markets a new set of guidelines, but shoppers will not see as much change as initially expected.

After months of debate, council passed an ordinance this week that requires all food at the markets to be labeled. This will tell the shopper who grew the product and where it comes from.

However, council leaders chose not to require food to be sold only by the farmer that grew it. They also said no to a limitation that food must come from within a 50-mile radius of town.

Instead, leaders will leave those decisions up to each market.
