Roanoke Police are investigating after they say a cab driver shot a man who lunged at him with a knife.

At about 3:20 a.m. Saturday Roanoke police officers responded to Campbell Avenue SE and Williamson Road SE after a caller reported he had shot someone who had a knife.

Officers were in the area and heard the shot.

 

The 34-year old cab driver told officers he shot

Antwan Stancil, 33.

 

The cab driver told officers he

was having pizza with another witness in the 100 block of Campbell Avenue SW when Stancil approached them and asked for a cigarette.

The cab driver said he declined to give Stancil a cigarette, then he said Stancil asked to buy a cigarette from him, and once again he declined.

 

The cab driver told officers, Stancil became combative, pulled a knife and lunged at him in a threatening manner.

 

The cab driver said he pulled out his gun and fired one shot at Stancil.

 

Stancil was taken to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital and charges are pending against Stancil.

Police say the cab driver was cooperative with officers and detectives.

 

The case is still under investigation.
