Blue Ridge Marathon impacts Roanoke’s tourism industry.

Runners flooded the streets of Roanoke this morning, taking on the challenge that is the Blue Ridge Marathon, with a 7,400 ft. of elevation change.

The event is huge for the City of Roanoke.

The race offered something for everyone, with a 10K, half marathon, and marathon, it brought in people from all over the country.

“I had to come back this year because last year I told myself I would run it in 5 hours.  I got out there and realized I couldn’t’t maintain a 5 hour pace,” says runner John Carter.

For other runners, the race was a motivational tool to inspire other women.

“I can to get some exercise, enjoy the beautiful day, and to be with my friends,” says Meredith Withers.

Once marathoners completed the 26.2 miles, they enjoyed the music in the amphitheater.

The Roanoke Valley Convention and Visitors Bureau say this event really showcases what the Star City has to offer.

“It’s beautiful, it’s green,  it’s out Blue Ridge Mountains, what better way to have people from 40 different states, including Alaska and Hawaii coming here and seeing this beautiful area and experiencing our beautiful mountains,” said Catherine Fox, Director of Public Relations and Tourism for Roanoke.
