Dabney S. Lancaster Showcases Woodsmen Event

Competition is a constant theme in every culture, but the ways in which those cultures compete is different.

One group that embraces a very unique form of competition is the Forestry Department at Dabney S. Lancaster Community College in Clifton Forge.

Over the weekend they hosted and competed in the 13th Annual Mid-Atlantic Woodsmen’s Meet and the STIHL Timbersports Collegiate & Professional Series Mid-Atlantic Qualifier.

Students competed in events such as the Axe Throw, Pole Climb, Bolt Split, and the Chain Saw.

Even the ladies compted in these events, and some were just as good if not better than the boys.

Gretchen Killmon was one of the ladies competing in the Pole Climb and she says it’s nice to get out and compete with the guys, and sometimes show them up.

Killmon competes for Pen State Mont Alto who has a rich history in Timbersport Competition.
