Throughout the commonwealth, the manufacturing and abuse of meth has been on the rise. However police didn't see it in Bedford County until recently.

"We didn't see that much of it then all of a sudden here we are we got a problem now," says Sheriff Mike Brown, Bedford County Sheriff's Department.

We found out the department investigated a total of 15 cases involving meth labs since 2010 however eight of those happened in the past six to seven months.

Most recently, Megan Gunter and Shane Lenneman from Lynchburg were arrested and charged with conspiracy to manufacture meth.

Sheriff Brown says the recent rise in meth cases could be linked to the decline of prescription pill abuse since they focused on getting rid of the problem several years ago.

Unfortunately the sheriff says it just brought another problem into the county.

"When one illegal activity flies out the window, another illegal activity goes in the door," says Sheriff Brown. "In this case, the pill factories were shut down in this area and the meth opened up."

The sheriff's department has spent about $5,000 on meth lab clean up.
