Hokies Open Spring Practice with Questions

The Hokies opened Spring Practice in Blacksburg with some questions that need answers..and a lot of “new” this season.  Offensive line coach Jeff Grimes has been replaced by Stacy Searels and there is a bit of a quarterback battle brewing after the departure of Logan Thomas to the NFL.

Fifth year senior Mark Leal is heading the charge after that disappointing Sun Bowl performance. Freshman Andrew Ford and Christiansburg’s Brenden Motley are also in the mix. Motley is a former Christiansburg High standout who took Tim Cromer’s group to the state finals before falling.  Frank Beamer commented on the quarterback situation on Thursday afternoon and said the difference between a good season and a great one is often times the play of the quarterback–and he says the Hokies will have a good one.
Defensively the Hokies look strong despite the loss of seven seniors from Bud Foster’s gang. Virginia Tech’s defensive backfield is as talented as any with Fuller, Faycson and Bonner returning and Kyshoen Jarrett recovering from offseason surgery. Coach Beamer was right to work in practice number one working with the placekickers–he liked the way they all performed but will be looking for consistency in the coming weeks. Virginia Tech’s spring game is slated for April 26th.
