Bedford doesn't raise taxes but increases electric rates for upcoming 2015 budget

The Bedford Town Council passed the 2015 budget Tuesday night. It was $2 million fewer than the year before. It's less after the town and county now share some services after the reversion such as water and sewer. In the upcoming budget, there are no tax increases but some benefits had to be eliminated.

Town officials decided to get rid of recycling pick up since they estimated about a quarter of people use it. This combined with the decrease in the solid waste fund, it'll save each household about $3 a month.

However you'll see a jump in your electric bill. Starting in July when the budget goes into effect there will be a 2% increase in rates. That's on top of the 1% already in place after the town got an unexpected $560-thousand transmission bill in January.

Town officials say the rates will be a few dollars more a month for an average household but business owners like Joe Marino of Ivy Bridge Cafe it'll add up to several hundred dollars a year.

"Every year it seems like it's going up and the more it goes up the harder for us to survive," says Marino.
