BEDFORD (WSLS 10) – Bedford County Sheriff’s investigators charged Shana Witt with first degree murder of her child, two year old Jordan Smith. The father, Michael Smith was also arrested and charged with two counts of felony child abuse and neglect and one count of manufacturing methamphetamines. Both are being held in the Bedford Adult Detention center on no bond.

The incident happened about 1:35 p.m. on Peaksview Lane in Bedford, Va. Deputies found the child unresponsive and not breathing and was taken to Bedford County Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The commonwealth’s attorney, Randy Krantz, says there is probable cause that the killing was willful and premeditated and that the mother could have 20 years to life behind bars.

The couple who are married also have another child. He is under the custody of family members and wasn’t at the home when the incident occurred.

“Really the grunt work now is interviewing people, following up on leads,” says Sheriff Mike Brown, Bedford County Sheriff’s Department.
