State Police release holiday crash stats

Virginia State Police say 20 lives were lost in traffic crashes in the Commonwealth over the holidays.

According to preliminary reports, 20 people were killed in 19 separate accidents over the Christmas and New Year’s holiday — up from 16 deaths in 2012.

The Christmas counting period started at 12:01 a.m. on December 21, 2013 and wrapped up at midnight on Christmas.

Nine crashes took 10 lives during that time.

None of the accidents happened in our area.

The New Year’s holiday counting period began at 12:01 a.m ona.m.cember 28, 2013 and ended and midnight on January 1, 2014.

10 people died in 10 crashes statewide during those five days.

Of those 10 fatalities, there were crashes in Buchanan, Henry County, and Patrick County.
