Roanoke Boys and Girls Club starts first ever STEM camp

During the summer months many kids enjoy going to camp, but some students at the Boys and Girls Club in Roanoke are spending time at the first ever Science, Technology, Engineering and Math camp.

The Boys and Girls Club Executive Director says STEM camp was a simple idea that came from a conversation with financial supporters, the management of Virginia Transformer Corporation.

In their line of work they have a vested interest in improving student's math and science skills, so the company is investing about $90,000 in to the program for the next two years

Students say there is a difference between the classroom and camp.

“It has a lot more fun stuff to do. Usually when I'm in school and I'm doing math and science I'm just like this or I'm paying attention but it just looks like I'm bored,” said Ayanna Gibens, a 5th grader.

There is a pre and post camp to test to gauge how much the students have learned.
