AMS Certified Meteorologist Kristina Montuori is thrilled to be doing what she loves in her hometown. You can catch her forecasts weekdays from 5-7 a.m. on Virginia Today.

AMS certification is the highest rating given by the American Meteorological Society.

Kristina grew up in Roanoke, but chose to begin her meteorology career in the ArkLaTex (Arkansas, Louisiana, and Texas) because it is an excellent place to receive severe weather experience. Kristina was there for the record-breaking 2011 tornado season, the deadliest in over 50 years. Her viewers commended her on how well she handled several outbreaks as she eased their worries and prepared them for many serious situations.

Weather has always fascinated Kristina. She knew that wanted to study weather & become a meteorologist ever since a meteorologist visited her third grade class at Fishburn Park Elementary School. She decided pursue broadcast meteorology after two exciting weather internships at WSLS 10, with Meteorologists Jeff Haniewich and Patrick McKee.

Following in Jeff and Patrick’s footsteps, Kristina received her meteorology degree from the University of North Carolina at Asheville. As a meteorology major and mathematics minor, she maintained the highest GPA in the Atmospheric Science Department her entire college career. She was also a division 1 student athlete on the Varsity Women’s Soccer Team and team captain her senior year.

Kristina graduated Cum Laude with Distinction in Atmospheric Science and received the Atmospheric Science Academic Excellence award. She was the first UNCA athlete to be inducted into the Omicron Delta Kappa National Leadership Society and was awarded the GlaxoSmithKline Women in Science Scholar of the Year award two years in a row.

Kristina is a member of the Roanoke Valley branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) . This organization works for educational & career equality for women by providing scholarships and more.

Kristina is a member of the American Meteorological Society and loves continuing to learn more about the exciting field of meteorology.
