Schlosser pitches Hillcats past Red Sox

By News Advance Staff

Lynchburg’s Gus Schlosser and Salem’s Yeiper Castillo were locked in a classic pitcher’s duel before the Hillcats broke the scoreless tie with a three-run eighth to take a 3-1 win over the Red Sox on Saturday.

Schlosser, who hasn’t given up a run in more than three weeks, pitched five scoreless innings, scattering four hits and striking out nine. Castillo, with a 2.25 ERA through four Carolina League starts, went seven innings and gave up just one hit while striking out eight.

But Salem went to its bullpen in the eighth and the game turned ugly for reliever Jeremiah Bayer. After retiring the first two batters he faced, Bayer gave up a single to Braeden Schlehuber. Emerson Landoni walked and Mycal Jones drove in Schlehuber with a single to center field.

An errant throw from the centerfielder to third base allowed Landoni to score and Jones wound up at third. Nick Ahmed’s single scored Jones and gave the Hillcats a 3-0 lead.

Salem got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the ninth when Hillcats reliever Ryan Weber gave up back-to-back singles with two outs. Weber struck out Brandon Jacobs to end the game and post his second consecutive save.

The Hillcats evened the series at 1-1 thanks to the strong start by Schlosser, who hasn’t given up a run in 28 1/3 innings. Andrew Wilson (1-1), who relieved Schlosser, picked up the win. He worked two scoreless innings and gave up just one hit.

Bayer (1-2) took the loss giving up three runs, two earned, in the eighth inning.

The series finale in Salem is at 4:05 p.m. today. RHP Cody Martin (10-7, 3.24) will start for Lynchburg against RHP Matt Barnes (5-3, 3.07) for the Red Sox.
